How to clean a boat cover, a bimini or a roof? What equipment do I need?

Maintaining a bimini, a sun awning or a roof top is subdivided into two distinct operations: cleaning of the frame and cleaning of the canvas. In general, all these equipments are made of the same materials, they just vary according to the models. Thus, to facilitate the use of this guide, we will define the maintenance methods according to the main types of materials encountered on the market. Regarding fabrics, we mainly distinguish: coated polyester (acrylic fabrics), poly / cotton and quilted fabric. As for the frames, they are generally made of stainless steel (stainless steel), aluminum or PVC.

Equipment for cleaning the canvas of an awning, bimini or roof

Acrylic fabrics can be maintained once a month, lightly (general or light cleaning), and once or twice a year in depth (intensive cleaning). As for the poly / cotton or quilted fabric models, if they are used at a high frequency, they must be washed every three months and intensively. The equipment needed to maintain this type of accessory is listed below:

Stainless steel frames

If you use your boat frequently, it will be necessary to clean the frame of the sun awning or the roof of the coachroof at least once a month, or even every two weeks. The material required for such an operation is as follows:

Freshwater
Cleaning and degreasing product intended for stainless steel
Water repellent for stainless steel
Anti-scratch sponge
Clean, dry cloth

Aluminum frame

Aluminum frames should be cleaned three to four times a year. The following materials are required to perform this task:

Mixture of fine salt, white vinegar and olive oil

PVC frame

PVC pipes can be cleaned two to three times a year. For effective maintenance, you will need the following materials:

Clear water
Soapy water or routine cleaning product

Canvas cleaning

How to clean a roof on a boat: cleaning acrylic fabrics

Why do we attach the cleaning a roof on a boat to acrylic canvases? Because most of the roofs marketed and manufactured in the world are made of acrylic fabrics.

Acrylic fabrics are the easiest to clean. For light cleaning, prepare a solution of mild soap or dishwashing liquid. Scrub the foreign objects with a telescopic brush, then spray the surface with a water jet. Pour the solution onto the fabric, wait for it to take effect, then brush again. Rinse once more and let dry.

If you're dealing with stubborn stains or mildew, move on to intensive cleaning. In this case, the canvas must be removed from the frame. Soak the fabric for about fifteen minutes in a tub filled with cleaning product for awning and roof, then dab the stains with a soft sponge or brush (this brushing should not be applied to the coated side). Finally, rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue, then air dry.

Cleaning poly / cotton and quilted fabric

The main disadvantage of this type of canvas is that they are difficult to maintain. So, unlike acrylic canvases, they should always be removed for effective cleaning. The advantage is that they can be machine washed, at 30 ° C for poly / cotton, between 30 ° C to 40 ° C for quilted fabric. In the absence of a machine, Prepare a cleaning solution (see the procedure for intensive cleaning of acrylic fabrics) and soak your fabric in it. After about twenty minutes, remove it and scrub it with a brush. Rinse thoroughly to remove soap and air dry.

NB:

If your coachroof or bimini top has zippers, take the opportunity to maintain them with lubricating wax.
Finally, at the start of each season, it is recommended to waterproof the fabric of its boat awnings and its roof. For this you must use a quality waterproofing product which will not damage your fabrics.

Reinforcement cleaning

Stainless steel frame

The sea is a particularly aggressive environment for stainless steel. This is the reason why your reinforcement must be frequently cleaned with fresh water, with particular attention to the joints. Indeed, these constitute areas favorable to the retention of dirt, surfaces at risk for the onset of corrosion. Treat all tubes with a cleaning product, then add a layer of water repellent protection. Repeat this for every wash and you won't have a problem.

Aluminum frame

Rinse your tubes with fresh water mixed with a gentle cleanser. Then protect them with a liquid cleaner or wax. For lime stains, just use dishwasher liquid and a damp cloth. Finally, if the stain is resistant, prepare a solution based on heated white vinegar, sea salt and olive oil. These ingredients will form an effective paste against difficult stains.

PVC frame

PVC frames are the easiest to clean. To get rid of the dirt, use lukewarm water with the addition of a cleanser or Marseille soap. Scrub the tubes with a sponge and rinse everything with clean water.

Our advice for cleaning a roof for a sailboat, a bimini or a cover for a boat

Avoid using high pressure cleaners on acrylic canvases. Pressurized water has a harmful mechanical action on their structure.
When cleaning stainless steel or aluminum, especially avoid strong chemicals or abrasives.
When cleaning stainless steel and aluminum, brushing (circular brushing) should be done in the same direction from start to finish.
In the event of surface corrosion of stainless steel or aluminum tubes, proceed with electrolytic polishing.
Consider redoing thewaterproofing of your boat covers or roof of roof all the seasons to preserve your fabrics and lengthen their lifespan.
Store your awning in increased protection to extend its lifespan.
